Damaged Ducts Can Mean High Cooling Bills

Monday, June 4th, 2018

corrugated-ductworkHave you ever received a monthly utility bill and reeled back in shock? “Who—who was using this much electricity?” you wonder. Your mind flashes back, trying to determine if somebody left all the lights on in the house for a few days, or if you were entertaining too many visitors over too many days. But nothing stands out. It’s been status quo over the last month as far as lights, appliances, and the air conditioner are concerned.

Here’s one possible culprit, the thief who’s stealing energy from your home: leaky air ducts. Your air conditioning system may be exerting much more power to provide cooling to your home because of those damaged ducts. It’s often hard to detect at first that this is happening, but when damaged ducts take a toll, it can be steep!

When Is It Time to Call for Air Conditioning Repair?

Monday, April 13th, 2015

When your air conditioner develops a problem, acting quickly to get it fixed is key. HVAC problems tend to be progressive. When one part starts to break down, it often affects the entire system. If left alone, the problem may cause the entire system to break down. So the sooner you catch a problem with your air conditioning system, the more damage you’ll be able to prevent. How can you tell when your air conditioning system has a problem, though? There are couple of common indicators that your air conditioner is having trouble. Read on to find out what they are.

3 Common Air Conditioning Problems that You need to Watch for

Monday, April 6th, 2015

As we move into spring and the weather starts to warm, it is important that you start paying attention to the health of your air conditioner. The last thing you want to happen is have the system break down during a hot day. So, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on it and call for professional repair whenever you notice a problem. Read on to learn about 3 of the more common air conditioning problems that you need to watch out for.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil is the part responsible for evaporating refrigerant to siphon heat from the air. Without the evaporator coil, the air conditioner wouldn’t actually be able to cool your home. As the evaporator coil evaporates refrigerant, condensation forms on it and flows out of the system through a drain pipe. If the evaporator coil gets too dusty, though, or a leak lowers the refrigerant level, it can cause the temperature around the coil to drop too low. This causes the condensation to freeze on the coil, forming ice that blocks its access to the heat in the air. If you notice ice forming on your air conditioner coil, turn it off and call us to schedule an appointment.

Refrigerant Leaks

The air conditioner cools your home by cycling refrigerant through the system. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will slowly drain refrigerant from the air conditioner until it can no longer operate. If you notice liquid dripping or pooling around your air conditioner, call us immediately. Another common sign is a gurgling sound when the system is turned on.

Short-Cycling

When your air conditioner keeps cycling on and off every few minutes, that’s called “short-cycling.” This is often caused by a malfunctioning compressor, which is the part responsible for circulating refrigerant through the system. If the compressor starts malfunctioning, it can cause pressure irregularities that throw off the rhythm of the system. This is an extremely damaging behavior if allowed to continue for an extended period of time, so be sure to turn off your system and call a professional if you notice it happening.

Air Conditioning Guide: Is it Time to Repair, or Replace?

Monday, April 22nd, 2013

Spring is a great time to ensure that our home is in tip-top shape for the heat and humidity of the summer. While routine maintenance should help ensure you get years of reliable cooling, there may come a time when you need to consider the decision between repairing and replacing. While it may make more financial sense to replace your AC in many cases, it’s important to know what your options are. That’s why professional consultation is so important. When you need exceptional Havertown, PA air conditioning services, call Wm. Henderson Plumbing Heating Cooling Services!

There are a number of factors to think about when deciding whether to repair or replace: your cooling needs, the condition of your home, budget, and so forth. The following is only a brief guide, and hands-on diagnosis should be performed by a professional before you make any decisions. That said, let’s take a look at some potential reasons to repair or to replace your AC:

It’s probably time for repair if…

  • Frozen coil: This is often caused by a clogged air filter, or some other airflow problem. When fixed, your AC will usually return to normal.
  • Water leak: Water leaks in or around the air handler are caused by a condensate drain overflow or drainpipe clog. This device fits under your evaporator coil to catch water and make sure it drains properly. Clearing the clog is usually a quick fix.
  • Debris accumulation: Sometimes your AC just needs to be professionally cleaned in order to restore its efficiency and effectiveness. Obviously, not a problem that requires you to replace your system.

It’s probably time to replace if…

  • AC is old: If your AC is old and it seems as though it’s reached the end of its life, then it’s a good time to at least begin thinking about replacement, even if your AC still works.
  • Frequent repairs: If your AC requires frequent repairs, you should consider replacement as a viable alternative. Not only would you receive a brand new highly efficient system, but you would also be able to avoid supporting an old system, and begin investing in your future comfort.

Whether you need repair or replacement, the Havertown, PA air conditioning experts at Wm. Henderson Plumbing Heating Cooling Services are here to assist you. Call us today!
