WHAT IS A DUCTLESS MINI-SPLIT HEATING & COOLING SYSTEM & HOW DOES IT WORK?
Ductless mini-splits, also known as, “mini-splits” and zoned HVAC, are a type of heating and cooling system that does not rely on air ducts to condition and distribute air. Ductless mini-split systems are made up of two main components: the indoor air handling unit and the outdoor compressor/condenser.
Oftentimes, the indoor unit is suspended from the ceiling or mounted high on the wall. This unit sends conditioned air directly into your living space and it is directly connected to an outdoor compressor through a refrigerant line. WM Henderson provides replacement and installation services for mini-split heating and cooling systems.
TRADITIONAL AIR CONDITIONER VS. HEAT PUMPS
Traditional heat pumps and ductless mini-splits operate similarly by connecting an indoor air-handling unit to an outdoor compressor or condenser. However, unlike a heat pump, the indoor air handler can be installed directly into the room instead of needing the extra ductwork system to transfer conditioned air into the rooms of your home.
Traditional air conditioner units work by removing heat from your space and transferring the heat to your outdoor condenser unit. A hump pump works in an opposite manner. It takes the heat from the outdoor environment and transfers it indoors. If you need assistance installing a ductless mini-split heat pump, give our team a call by phone at 484-206-8594.
BENEFITS OF DUCTLESS MINI-SPLIT HEAT PUMPS
If you’re working on a home renovation or addition that doesn’t include any existing ductwork, we recommend hiring a licensed HVAC contractor to perform a ductless mini-split heating and air installation. Additionally, they are a great option if you live in a large home, that doesn’t require certain areas to be conditioned at all times. Because each unit has its own thermostat, you can control the spaces you are occupying, saving money and energy in the spaces that are not.
ADDITIONAL BENEFITS OF DUCTLESS MINI-SPLITS INCLUDE:
- Easy Installation – only requires a 3-inch hole in the wall for the conduit
- Separate thermostat controls provide flexibility for your space
- Doubles as an air conditioning and heating system
- Save money and energy, reducing your carbon footprint
- No ductwork is required
DEBUNKING THE MYTHS
There’s no surprise that with any technology, there is an opinion of what is best for your home. In order for ductless mini-split heat pumps to work at their maximum efficiency, they need to be used properly and under the right conditions. Like anything, there are many misconceptions about ductless and mini-split heat pumps.
Electric heat pumps are actually known to save you money on your annual energy costs. The amount of money saved depends on factors such as efficiency, condition, and placement of the equipment.
MINI-SPLIT HEAT PUMPS DISTRIBUTE BACTERIA
Ductless mini-split heating and air systems actually provide better air quality and remove more allergens from the conditioned air than traditional systems. They are equipped with filter systems as well as self-cleaning functions so that bacteria never have the chance to settle.
OPERATING ALL YEAR REDUCES LIFE CYCLE
As long as your ductless mini-split heating and cooling system is properly maintained and serviced, ductless heat pumps can have the same life span as any traditional HVAC system. Just as you would with any major appliance, your system should be serviced regularly to ensure longevity.
MINI-SPLIT HEAT PUMPS DON’T WORK IN COLD CLIMATES
Ductless heat pumps offer higher efficiency ratings than boiler-based systems and cost less to operate. They maximize the amount of heat generated from the energy consumed, so it is as efficient as a heater and an air conditioner.

Updates to the Regional HVAC Equipment Efficiency and Testing Standards
Effective January 1, 2023, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will update its efficiency and testing standards for residential and commercial HVAC equipment. All regulatory changes will differ by product type and region. Since the updated standards will result in price increases across all HVAC contractors, now is the time to buy the equipment you need for your home or business.
The minimum efficiency standards for residential and commercial air conditioners and heat pumps manufactured after January 1, 2023, will increase. This change will increase production efficiency and national energy savings while decreasing national energy consumption.
Northern U.S. & Canada
All split-system air conditioners, split-system heat pumps, and packaged units manufactured after January 1, 2023, must meet the updated standards. However, split-system air conditioners, split-system heat pumps, and packaged units manufactured before January 1, 2023, can be installed indefinitely. The efficiency rating for air conditioners will increase from 13 SEER to 15 SEER in these regions.
Split-system air conditioners manufactured before January 1, 2023, can’t be installed once the updated standards take effect. All installations of products that don’t meet the new standards must be completed by December 31, 2022. However, split-system heat pumps, single-packaged air conditioners, and single-packaged heat pumps manufactured after January 1, 2023, can be installed indefinitely. The efficiency rating for air conditioners will increase from 14 SEER to 15 SEER in both the Southwest and Southeast regions.
In addition to higher minimum efficiency standards, the M1 testing procedures used for residential and 3 to 5-ton light commercial, single-phase equipment manufactured on or after January 1, 2023, will increase. This change will produce more accurate SEER, EER, and HSPF efficiency ratings. Manufacturers will be required to re-test equipment using the new M1 Standard requirements as well as publish equipment efficiency ratings using the new efficiency metrics of SEER2, EER2, and HSPF2.
