- You feel hotter when it’s humid. Humidity has the effect of making your body temperature rise, making it feel hotter and forcing you to run the air conditioner for longer to get the temperature where you need it to be.
- Frost forms on the coils. When there’s excessive humidity in the air, the moisture will coalesce and turn to ice on the coils that hold the refrigerant. This forms an insulating barrier between the refrigerant and the air it’s supposed to cool, and prevents the system for working as efficient as it’s supposed to.
- The drain pan gets overwhelmed. Most air conditioners have a drip pan designed to catch moisture as it condenses from the cooling air. High humidity increases the amount of that moisture, and can potentially overload the pan. This is especially the case if the pan already shows any slight problems, such as misalignment of the pan, or a mild clog in the drain line. Most forms of air conditioner have an automatic shut-off switch to prevent the pan from overflowing (which could damage any number of components as the water spreads), but that still leaves you unable to turn it on until the problem can be solved.
