Do Spooks and Goblins Live in Your Water Pipes?

Our expert technicians are here for youSchedule Online Today

It’s a sure bet that you would much rather have only water come from the water pipes, and not be accompanied by all of these irritating and bothersome noises.

Where are the noises coming from? Are they causing any harm? Or are they just a nuisance?
While spooky noises can be upsetting, there is a bigger problem that comes into play; and yes, it can damage your plumbing system.

Water Hammer
It could be that the noise you hear may be the result of a too loose, or a too tight fit where the pipe passes through a wood frame. (This is more likely with a hot-water pipe.)

The moment the quickly flowing water stops, it causes a shock. This is known as “water hammer” which causes a loud bang.

The shock of this movement can make the pipes move and the impact can cause joints to leak and can even cause cracks in the pipes. Additionally, the shock can damage valves and compromise other parts of your plumbing system.

Vibrations
Your spooky water pipe noises could also be caused by the vibration of water pipes against the walls. The pipe may need to be strapped more securely to stop the vibration. Alternately, pieces of foam can be compressed into the space between the wall and the pipes to dampen the vibrations.

Water Pressure
It could be that the strange noises are caused by water pressure that is too high. Water pressure in the pipes of your home should usually not be above 60 psi. A pressure-reducing valve can help alleviate this problem. If the noises still persist, you may need professional plumbing services to install what is called a “water hammer arrester.” These act rather like shock absorbers and will put an end to the spooky sounds that go bump in the night!
