Why Your Central Air Conditioning System Smells Bad

Posted by Michael Henderson

Have you noticed a strange odor coming from your home’s air conditioning system when you turn it on?  There are a couple different things that could be the cause of this issue and it likely means that you need repair for your air conditioning in Havertown, PA. Read below for a quick explanation of what causes this and then call us for air conditioning repairs.

  • Clogged condensate tray – Your air conditioning system produces condensation when the warm, moist air from your home passes over the cool evaporator coils. This is similar to when you take a cold glass outside on a hot day and water forms on the sides of the glass. When your AC is running that condensation should drip down into a collector pan. But if the pan gets clogged with dust or dirt it can start to clog and then mildew. As your AC pushes air through the evaporator coils the odor from the mildew can get pushed into your home.
  • Dirty coils – As we mentioned above, your air conditioning system pushes air over a series of evaporator coils. Sometimes the coils can get covered in dust, dirt or bacteria. When mixed with the moisture from condensation, these things can cause a foul odor in your home. Getting regular maintenance and cleaning the coils can help prevent this issue from happening.
  • Clogged air filter – Your air conditioning system has an air filter that is there to protect the moving parts from dust, dirt and other debris. But if the filter gets clogged it could cause an odor from the contaminants that it traps. During regular maintenance visits, your AC technician will make sure to change that filter so that any particles that it traps doesn’t smell up your home.
