Beware of Air Conditioning Myths

High temperatures are here in Springfield, PA and with summer right around the corner, you're going to be using your air conditioner more and more often. That means your air conditioning bills will be going up and you want your system to function as effectively as possible in order to keep your home comfortable without going broke. There are a number of air conditioning myths that people accept as truth: plausible, and logical, but wrong all the same. They can cost you a great deal in lost energy, and by making adjustments to avoid them, you can save yourself a great deal of money.

Myth: Setting a Lower Temperature Makes the Air Come Out Cooler

It's logical to assume that the lower you set your thermostat, the cooler the air will be produced. This isn't the case, however. Air conditioners have two settings -- on and off --- and the temperature setting determines roughly how long the system will run, not the comparative coolness of the air it produces. Setting the temperature lower than you want puts undue strain on the system and will end up raising your bills.

Myth: It Costs Less to Run the AC All Day Than to Turn it On with a Hot House

There's actually some reasoning behind this myth, since air conditioners use more energy turning on and off than they do simply running. So why not turn it on in the cool of the early morning, then leave it running all day rather than incurring that extra cost? Well, because the money you spend running the air in an empty house for 8 hours or more is much higher than turning on the air during a hotter part of the day. Instead of running the system when you're not home during the work week, set it to turn on about 15 or 20 minutes before you're expected to arrive home. Your house will be just as cool and you'll save a great deal of money.
