Why Is High Humidity Such a Problem?

Heat and humidity go hand in hand here in Havertown, PA and sometimes it can be difficult parsing one from the other. But in fact, they’re two different issues and while they often feed into each other, their solutions are often quite distinct. When summer comes, you need to be able to handle both of them adroitly, and the more you understand about how high humidity affects your body, the better your decisions on this front will be. Here’s a quick breakdown  of why high humidity is such a problem?

Sweat Won’t Evaporate

Humidity is usually measured in relative humidity, listed from 0% to 100% and gauging the amount of ambient moisture in the air. When that number gets above 50% or so, it stops the sweat from evaporating off of your body, leaving you feeling clammy and gross. But it gets worst. Sweating — and specifically the evaporation of sweat off of our skin — is our body’s natural way of keeping cool. When that can’t happen, the air feels hotter than it is, forcing your air conditioner to work harder and raising your monthly bills in comparison.

Possible Solutions

A viable solution to the problem is to install a whole-home dehumidifier, which will automatically reduce the moisture levels in your home. Another option is to make sure you’re adequately ventilated, especially in the kitchen or bathroom, which means having an expert arrive to conduct duct repair if necessary, and ensure that your exhaust fans are running the way they need to be. Making adjustments to your plumbing works too, especially if you find puddles gathering at the foundation of your home due to downspouts and rain gutters. You can even lower the humidity levels by simply running your air conditioner, though that will cost you additional money in monthly bills.

WM Henderson, Inc. is standing by to help you cut down on high humidity.
