How Does Radiant Heating Work?

With fall officially arriving in the Springfield, PA area, now is the time to consider installing a new heating system if your old one has bitten the dust. And while most of us are accustomed to forced-air furnaces or boilers, there are other options available if you are in the market for something different. Radiant heating systems, in particular, make a remarkable effective means of warming your home, and while the installation cost may be higher than other kinds of heating, it comes with many tangible, long-term benefits. Here’s how it all works.

From the Ground Up

Radiant heating systems entail a series of tubes installed under the floorboards of your home. Heated liquid — usually water — is pumped through the tubes, spreading warmth up directly through your toes and the furniture in the room. The up-front cost is high because the technicians will need to remove and replace the flooring in your home. Once that step is out of the way, however, the benefits become clear. They include:

  • Low Cost. Radiant heating systems don’t use nearly as much power as other systems: mostly just the pump required to circulate the liquid. That means big savings over other systems in terms of month-to-month cost.
  • Infrequent Repairs. Because the system is largely located under the floor, it stays safe from damage, and since there are few moving parts beyond the pump itself, it rarely requires more than routine maintenance.
  • No Breezes of Cold Spots. Traditional furnaces heat the air in the home, which can be wasteful since it warms our body indirectly. It also spreads germs and illnesses more readily and can result in things like cross breezes and cold spots that disrupt your household comfort levels. Radiant heating avoids all of that.
