Split-System Central Air Conditioners

The most common system in residential properties, a split-system air conditioner is one where the cool air in the property is delivered through air ducts throughout the home. The components of the system are split into two units that contain different parts, with one unit that stays in the home and one outside. A split system will include:

  • Ducts
  • Thermostats
  • Evaporator
  • Compressor
  • Condenser

The parts that are kept outside are the compressor and condenser. The ducts, thermostats and evaporator are inside the property.

Ducted Package Air Conditioning Units

Package units are all-in-one systems, where the entire heating and cooling components are housed outside in one large cabinet-style unit. These units can be placed on the ground or on a rooftop and are available for both residential and commercial properties. There are 3 types of packaged units available on the market, all of which can provide both heating and cooling:

  • heat pumps units
  • electric strip heat units
  • gas and electric units

The benefits of packaged units are that they save space and are usually very energy efficient. Each unit runs a little differently from the other, so we recommend speaking with a Wm. Henderson expert before purchasing.

Ductless Split Air Conditioning Units

Ductless air conditioning units are a great option for those who do not have ducted properties or need to create efficiently zoned heating and cooling within their property.

The installation of a ductless system is much less invasive than that of a ducted system, and only requires that a small hole be drilled into an outside wall to connect the outdoor unit with the indoor components. A ductless split air conditioner uses small indoor units that can mounted flush to a wall or ceiling and an outdoor unit that contains the compressor, condenser and condenser fan. These are connected through the wall by a conduit containing refrigerant and power lines, giving you a lot of flexibility for placement. The outdoor unit can usually host 4 indoor units, and there are larger outdoor units that can host up to 8 indoor units.
