Is Ductless Air Conditioning Right for Me?

The advent of ductless air conditioning – which has been in the commercial property market for some time – has opened a new door in the residential air conditioning market, enabling some people who have had limited air conditioning choices to install air conditioning into their properties. But like any other purchase you make for your home, it is best to review if a ductless air conditioner is a good choice for your home. Wm. Henderson Plumbing & Heating, Inc. has executed the installation of a number of ductless air conditioning systems in Ardmore. To help you research whether or not one is right for you, our experts have put together a pros and cons list.

Pros of Installing a Ductless Air Conditioner

  • Energy Efficiency – ductless air conditioners need to have a minimum SEER number of 13 and go as high as 28. Also, because there is no ductwork needed for this type of air conditioner, there is no duct-related energy loss.

  • Very Quiet – ductless system indoor blowers are designed to make far less noise than a window unit or outdoor split system unit may make.

  • Flexible Placement – the indoor air blowers for a ductless system are quite small and compact, requiring minimal space and allowing for installation high on walls, hanging from ceilings or even free-standing.

  • Straightforward Installation – ductless air conditioners do not require serious construction work for installation; all that is required is a connection between the blower and the outdoor unit. To make this connection, a small hole – about 3 inches in diameter – is drilled into an exterior wall where the indoor blower and outdoor unit are connected by a conduit.

  • Zone Control – each indoor blower is programmable, allowing for individualized temperature setting and programming for each space. This kind of control can help with energy efficiency and comfort level, and help eliminate hot and cold spots that can develop with air conditioners that have a single temperature setting. Many ductless air conditioners come with a remote control with which to program the indoor blower, helping to make programming even easier.

  • Easily Expandable – if you expand your property and don’t want to extend your ductwork (or don’t have it), it can be quite easy to install another blower for air conditioning in the new space. Also, most outdoor units can accommodate up to 4 indoor blowers.

Cons of Installing a Ductless Air Conditioner

  • Installation Cost May Be Higher Than a Traditional Split System – a ductless air conditioner may cost more for installation, minus the charge of any needed ductwork.

  • Make Sure It’s the Right Size – as with a traditional split-system air conditioner, purchasing a ductless air conditioner that can’t cool enough or cools too much will not be cost-effective.
