HVAC Equipment Energy Efficiency Ratings
The types of HVAC energy efficiency ratings which are used are entirely dependent on what type of system you are looking at, and as such each is slightly different.
- Air Conditioners utilized a method of efficiency ratings called SEER or the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It is a federal government requirement that every air conditioner manufactured has a minimum SEER 13, but this number can currently range as high as 27 or more. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the AC is, and the more its initial price tag. High efficiency systems have SEER 16 or higher ratings.
- Furnaces use the method of efficiency ratings called AFUE or the Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency rating. AFUE ratings come in percentages which range from 78% all the way up to 98% and higher. High efficiency systems have an AFUE of 90% or higher.
- Heat Pumps offer the option of both heating and cooling indoor air and the method of efficiency ratings is called HSPF or the Heating Seasonal Performance Factor. The HSPF require that a heat pump rates at higher than 8 HSPF. It will also come with a SEER rating for the cooling capacity during summertime months.
