3 Common Air Conditioning Problems that You need to Watch for

As we move into spring and the weather starts to warm, it is important that you start paying attention to the health of your air conditioner. The last thing you want to happen is have the system break down during a hot day. So, it’s a good idea to keep an eye on it and call for professional repair whenever you notice a problem. Read on to learn about 3 of the more common air conditioning problems that you need to watch out for.

Frozen Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil is the part responsible for evaporating refrigerant to siphon heat from the air. Without the evaporator coil, the air conditioner wouldn’t actually be able to cool your home. As the evaporator coil evaporates refrigerant, condensation forms on it and flows out of the system through a drain pipe. If the evaporator coil gets too dusty, though, or a leak lowers the refrigerant level, it can cause the temperature around the coil to drop too low. This causes the condensation to freeze on the coil, forming ice that blocks its access to the heat in the air. If you notice ice forming on your air conditioner coil, turn it off and call us to schedule an appointment.

Refrigerant Leaks

The air conditioner cools your home by cycling refrigerant through the system. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will slowly drain refrigerant from the air conditioner until it can no longer operate. If you notice liquid dripping or pooling around your air conditioner, call us immediately. Another common sign is a gurgling sound when the system is turned on.

Short-Cycling

When your air conditioner keeps cycling on and off every few minutes, that’s called “short-cycling.” This is often caused by a malfunctioning compressor, which is the part responsible for circulating refrigerant through the system. If the compressor starts malfunctioning, it can cause pressure irregularities that throw off the rhythm of the system. This is an extremely damaging behavior if allowed to continue for an extended period of time, so be sure to turn off your system and call a professional if you notice it happening.
