FIX TIPS

Quick-Fix Tips For Your Plumbing Emergencies
Starting your day with a shower of only cold water can be quite a shock. Knowing what to do in a plumbing emergency, before your licensed plumbing-heating-cooling contractor arrives may be the difference between a small inconvenience and a major problem, according to the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Information Bureau (PHCIB).

Where's The Hot Water?
When there is no hot water, one of three things is probably wrong with your water heater:
-If there is no loss of water pressure, but the water supply is cold, it is probably a burned out pilot light or a blown fuse. Check a gas-fired unit to see if the pilot light is off. Follow the unit's instructions to relight. For an electrical unit, check the fuse panel and flip the correct circuit breaker to "on".
-If there is a reduction in water pressure, check your water heater for leakage. If leaking, turn the valve on the top unit off. Next, shut off the fuel. Turn the gas control valve off for a gas-fired unit, or flip the circuit breaker off for an electric unit.
-In gas-fired units only, the gas valve or thermocouple could fail. For this, call a professional immediately.

Water, Water Everywhere...The Pipe Burst.
If a pipe has burst and is flooding your home, you can identify the problem before calling a licensed professional. Here are the steps to follow:
-Reduce pipe pressure by opening the faucets of the fixture at the lowest level of the home, usually the basement sink. Then identify the exact location and nature of the problem.
-For hot water line problems, turn off the water supply into the water heater. Turn the main line back on so cold water can be used while the pipe is being fixed.
-If the water is turned off for an extended period of time, turn the water heater off. Otherwise, a chance exists that pressure will build up in a gas-fired unit. In an electrical unit, the elements would be exposed and some can burn out if not surrounded by water.

What If You Have A Frozen Pipe?
During a very cold winter, frozen pipes are a common problem. If the pipes are located in a cabinet or crawlspace:
-Raise the house temperature to 80 degrees Fahrenheit.
-Open the cabinet and blow the warmer house air on the pipe with a fan.
-Use a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner as a blower and direct it on the frozen area.
-Soak bath towels in boiling water and wrap them around the frozen pipe.
-Squirt hot, not boiling, water on the frozen area with a turkey baster.
-Do not under any circumstances use an open flame. It is dangerous and can damage the pipes.

If A Frozen Sink Drain Is The Culprit:
-Fill the sink with very hot water and add a generous handful of table salt. If the ice is close enough to the sink, the salt can penetrate to melt the ice.

Clobbering Clogged Drains
Clogged sinks are a frequently occurring, but easily fixable problem for many homeowners. Here's how:
-Most sink clogs are due to grease and easily detached. Simply pour boiling water with a few teaspoons of ammonia down the drain. Wait a few minutes then use a plunger over the drain. For double-bowl sinks, hold down a drain stopper in one bowl while you plunge the other.
-Bathtub clogs are harder to fix. Try plunging the drain, but cover the overflow so as not to blow the air out.
-Sometimes the drains are stopped up due to the sewer. To check, flush the toilet. If water bubbles up in the basement sink, the sewer is backed up. Stop using water or at least spread the water usage apart to allow ample drain time. If the sump pumps into the sewer, unplug it or sewage will pump through the sump.
-William Henderson Plumbing does not recommend using chemical solutions to clear drains. Chemicals cannot create enough heat to clear clogs past the drain trap, where most clogs are formed. In addition, continuous use of chemicals has been known to deteriorate pipes.

Plugged Toilets
Plugged toilets are a more delicate matter since the heat from chemicals or hot water can crack the china. For this problem:
-A plunger is best for a small to moderate clog.
-For a more stubborn clog, it is possible, although slightly risky, to use a closet auger.
