How to Drain Your Water Heater

Your water heater does its job silently and effectively, but because it’s usually tucked away in the basement or garage of your Springfield, PA home, it can be hard to spot the signs of approaching trouble. Unfortunately, that often turns little problems into big repair jobs and can sometimes necessitate the replacement of the whole unit. A little preventative maintenance can go a long way and we urge our customers to set up an annual service call to keep your water heater running the way it should. You can help your cause out further by draining your water heater and flushing out the sediment at the bottom every few months. It’s an easy operation and requires only a length of house and somewhere to send the water in the tank (ideally a nearby drain line, but a large barrel or bucket will do as well. Here’s a step-by-step breakdown.

  1. Shut off the heat source for the water heater, either by turning off the gas or disconnecting the electrical power.
  2. Shut off the water line leading to the water heater.
  3. Connect one end of the hose to the drain valve in the water heater and the other end to a drain line or bucket.
  4. Open the drain valve.
  5. Open the pressure release valve at the top of the water heater to start the water flowing.
  6. Turn on the water line once the water has dropped below one-quarter of the tank size to make sure all of the sediment is flushed out. Repeat this step if necessary until the sediment is gone.
  7. Close the pressure relief valve and then the drain valve to refill the tank.
  8. Detach the hose and turn the gas or electricity back on.
