Does Your Heater Need Replacing?

Spring is finally here, and with warmer weather comes a break for your heating system. Now if the perfect time to evaluate its status and determine whether or not you need a new heater, or if your existing model can keep going. Here in Bryn Mawr, PA, we have a wide variety of heating systems used to warm our home, some of which may be decades old or even older. Since every home is different, there’s no blanket test to determine if your heater needs replacing. There are, however, a few guidelines to keep in mind which can help you make that determination.

The Cost of Running Your Existing Heater

As furnaces and other heating systems get older, they lose efficiency. Parts get worn down, filters become less reliable and the whole system needs to spend more energy to do its job. As the years go on, you’ll find your monthly heating bills creeping higher and higher, until your wallet is screaming for mercy. At some point, you may decide that the monthly savings of a newer and more efficient unit is worth the cost of installation.

Multiple Repairs or Larger Repairs

Older units may not break down, but when they do, you have to factor in repairs. Whether you’re dealing with an increasing number of repairs in a comparatively short amount of time, or one big repair that costs more than your system is worth, the comparative cost of installing a new system may be more than worth it.

Age

The age of your heater is a tricky thing. Depending on who well it’s been maintained, it might last many years beyond its warranty date, and some models tend to last more than others. But as a good rule of thumb, once your heater is more than 10 years old, you’ve likely gotten your money’s worth out of it. If an older heater starts to exhibit the kinds of problems listed above, that’s a good sign that you could use a new once.

WM Henderson, Inc. can install a new heating system for you this off season!
