Signs That You Need Sewer Repair

Your sewer line is designed to be as quiet and unobtrusive as possible, funneling waste out of your home so you don’t have to deal with it. That can make things difficult when your sewer line malfunctions, as you may not be able to recognize the signs. Though sewer problems tend to be rare, they can have some pretty nasty effects when they do happen. Read on to find out more about how to tell when your sewer line malfunctions.

Bad Smells

Your entire sewer system is designed to only flow one way. That is, all waste flows from your home out into the sewer line. Part of this design includes a sewer gas pipe that extends up through your house and out of your roof. This pipe is designed to vent sewer gas that rises up through the system without you ever having to smell it. Sometimes, however, a blockage or stuck valve can divert the sewer gas and cause it to come up through your drains. If you have bad smells coming out of your drains, especially if multiple drains are affected, you may need sewer repair.

Backflow

Backflow is what happens when a sudden change in pressure causes sewer water to flow back up your pipe and out of your drain. Most homes have backflow prevention devices to stop this, but there are still many that are unprotected. Often, backflow can be caused by an improper connection to the sewer line, whether from a malfunctioning valve or blockage preventing proper drainage. If you suddenly find water coming back up through your drain, you have a backflow problem. Call a professional as soon as possible to have it fixed.
